GOOGLE'S CHROME WEB BROWSER has overtaken Microsoft's Internet Explorer in market share for the first time.
The latest figures from Adobe Digital Index (ADI) have revealed that across US desktop and mobile device statistics, Chrome now has a 31.8 percent share of the market .up six percent year on year. The change in the US has tipped the balance for the rest of the world too.
Internet Explorer has fallen by the same figure to 30.9 percent, with Apple's Safari in third place at 25 percent, due to its prevalance on iPhone and iPads, where its mobile web browser share is 59.1 percent.
Mozilla Firefox has dropped to 8.7 percent, down from 20 percent two years ago. ADI suggests that this is due to its lack of a foothold in the mobile market. While Firefox has a fledgling operating system for mobile, it has a long way to go in order to catch up with its rivals.
Adobe Technology analyst Tyler White explained the phenomenon by saying "device defaults matter" but also pointed out that "users prefer a consistent experience across devices", meaning that with the huge market share of Android, which has Chrome as default web browser on almost all new devices, most Android users have switched to Chrome as their desktop web browsers too.
"Marketers need to be aware of browser usage as they build digital properties," said White. "Understanding the types of devices people are using is crucial to customer experience."
This week's WWDC has seen Apple emphasise all the things that its Safari mobile browser is capable of doing. With Chrome now dominating on desktop, Apple is bolstering its efforts to ensure that its mobile users don't jump ship to Chrome, but rather think twice about adopting Safari for their desktops. µ
