GOOGLE HAS ADDED a handful of designer frames to its Google Glass collection, in an apparent effort to lure hipsters to get onboard with the augmented vision technology.
Google has prevailed upon American designer Diane von Furstenberg, who last year took Google Glass to the catwalk, to launch the DVF collection, which includes five new frames and eight new shades for the Glass eyewear.
Google said in a post on its Google+ webpage, "Today we're announcing the DVF | Made for Glass collection, a collaboration that brings chic eyewear designs by iconic American fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg to the Glass Explorer [Programme]."
Google added that the new spectacle designs build on the Titanium Collection launched in January, which it unveiled along with prescription lenses for Google Glass.
The DVF collection will be available from 23 June, the same date that the Titanium Google Glass Collection will also start shipping. While Google has yet to announce pricing, The Verge reported that DVF collection frames with Glass and prescription lenses will cost $1,725, while sunglasses plus Glass will cost $1,620.
It's likely that more designer frames will be available soon, too, with Google having announced partnerships with both Rayban and Oakley earlier this year.
The launch of the DVF Glass collection comes as the firm is likely looking to distract from talk that engineering firm Dyson in fact invented the first smart eyeglasses 10 years ago.
Dyson revealed details about the prototype device, named the Dyson Halo, to celebrate the firm's 25th anniversary, and possibly to take a dig at Google.
Unlike Google Glass, it worked by using two mirrors to reflect images from two tiny monitors that sat near the wearer's temples, giving the illusion of a translucent 10in display around one metre in front of you. µ
