iPhone 6 reportedly will feature a 1704x960 display, A8 chip

But developers will be able to 'easily' scale apps

Apple iPhone 5S in space grey gold and silverWE ALREADY KNOW that the screen on the so-called iPhone 6 will be bigger and now, thanks to 9to5Mac, we've been treated to some additional details.

According to the Apple news website, which has heard from "sources familiar with the testing of at least one next generation iPhone model," the iPhone 6 will have a 1704x960 resolution display, as the firm ups its game to challenge the HD 1080p screens found on the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2.

If true, this would see the iPhone receiving a huge jump in resolution, something Apple last did when it moved from the 3.5in iPhone 4S screen to the 4in display of the iPhone 5.

While it's unclear whether this higher resolution will appear on the mooted 4.7in iPhone 6 or the larger 5.5in model, or both, it means that there's a lot of work ahead for iOS developers, who will have to scale their apps for the sharper screen(s).

However, 9to5Mac reported that this transition likely will be smoother than the leap from a 3.5in screen to a 4in screen, which caused iOS apps to display unsightly black bars to fill the unused screen space. This is because Apple has doubled the base resolution of the screen found on the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, making it easy for developers to double the scale of graphics and app visuals.

9to5Mac added, "Apps will automatically scale to fill the whole screen, but certain graphics may appear blurry on the higher-res display if they haven't been optimized."

There are also new iPhone 6 rumours claiming that the next generation flagship will feature an upgraded A8 processor, which likely will deliver "battery efficiency boosts" rather major speed improvements.

If previous rumours are to be believed, the iPhone 6 will also sport a redesigned metal casing, an upgraded rear camera sensor and support for wireless charging.
