RED HAT HAS RELEASED a beta of the next version of its Openstack distribution, which is set to combine the Icehouse version of the Openstack framework with its upcoming Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 operating system.

Announced at the OpenStack Summit in Atlanta this week, the beta of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Openstack Platform 5.0 offers the power of Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Openstack technology to deliver a scalable and secure foundation for building an open private or public cloud, the firm said.

The beta includes the latest Icehouse version of Openstack unveiled last month, and the beta code for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, the next version of Red Hat's flagship operating system.

Among the enhancements introduced with Icehouse, Red Hat highlighted a new compute API, an updated Openstack Block Storage Backup API and a new Modular Layer 2 plugin for the Neutron Openstack networking module as key improvements for customers.

However, Red Hat said that the full release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Openstack 5.0 will also introduce an improved, robust Openstack installer that works by integrating with the open source Foreman lifecycle management tool.

This will greatly simplify initial Openstack deployment and aid development of a complete Openstack infrastructure. It is set to include a step-by-step 'wizard-style' graphical user interface to guide customers through the installation process.

Red Hat also said it intends to follow up this release with a second version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Openstack 5.0 that integrates the older Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.

The firm said it will maintain these dual versions for a period of time so that customers can choose the distribution that best complements their operating system. µ
