Nokia Lumia 930 with Windows Phone 8.1MICROSOFT HAS REVEALED that it will begin the mainstream rollout of Windows Phone 8.1 on 24 June.

Microsoft has updated its support website with a release date of 24 June for the latest version of its Windows Phone mobile operating system, which will arrive just a week ahead of the UK release of the Nokia Lumia 930 handset that is now up for pre-order at £525. The update will be available for all Windows Phone 8 devices.

Microsoft noted on its support website that, as with its existing Windows Phone software, it will provide updates for Windows Phone 8.1 for 36 months, with the mainstream support end date pegged as 11 July 2017.

The company said, "Microsoft will make updates available for the Operating System, including security updates, for a minimum of 36 months after the lifecycle start date. These updates will be incremental, with each update built on the update that preceded it. Customers need to install each update in order to remain supported.

"The distribution of these incremental updates may be controlled by the mobile operator or the phone manufacturer from which you purchased your phone, and installation will require that your phone have any prior updates. Update availability will also vary by country, region, and hardware capabilities."

Windows Phone 8.1 has already been seeded to developers, and for those who don't fancy waiting until the end of June to get their hands on the update, it's said to be easy to install on any Windows Phone 8 device.

Simply sign into the Windows Phone App Studio website with a valid Microsoft account, select "start new project" and download the Preview for Developers app onto your Windows Phone 8 handset.

Once installed, you'll be able to make use of Windows Phone 8.1's feature set, which includes the ability to add custom wallpapers, a notifications centre and VPN support. Microsoft's Siri competitor Cortana is also included in the update, but this feature is not yet available in the UK. µ
