FACEBOOK IS ROLLING OUT an update to its privacy features that it claims will nudge its users towards better, wiser protection.
The firm will unleash a pop-up that features a dinosaur and cautions users about their personal settings.
The dinosaur will offer a "privacy checkup" informing users that they have not changed their privacy settings, that is, who can see their posts, for some time.
"We just wanted to make sure that you are sharing this with the right audience," it will add before linking to a "more information" webpage.
The benevolent dinosaur was unveiled at an media event hosted by Facebook. According to the Washington Post, Facebook showed off new features designed to make sharing simpler and more selective.
It will be clearer who users' Facebook posts are shared with, and the whole experience appears to have an air of 'are you really sure about this?' about it.
Facebook, which has a long and chequered privacy history, told the press that it does not like it when its users get bitten by lack of privacy. It hurts them, it said, and that hurts Facebook.
"Some people have felt Facebook privacy has changed too much in the past, or we haven't communicated as well as we could have," said Facebook product manager Michael Novak.
"Now we're thinking about privacy not just as a set of controls or settings, but as a set of experiences that help people feel comfortable."
