BLACKBERRY HAS ANNOUNCED that it is cutting ties with US mobile operator T-Mobile following the firms' public falling-out earlier this year.
Blackberry announced on Monday that it will not renew T-Mobile's licence when it expires on 25 April, which means that from the end of this month Blackberry devices will no longer be available through the US network. For those already on the T-Mobile network, Blackberry said that it will continue to support its devices.
A Blackberry spokesperson told The INQUIRER that this decision will not affect the company's relationship with T-Mobile in the UK.
Blackberry CEO John Chen said in a statement, "Blackberry has had a positive relationship with T-Mobile for many years. Regretfully, at this time, our strategies are not complementary and we must act in the best interest of our Blackberry customers. We hope to work with T-Mobile again in the future when our business strategies are aligned.
"We are deeply grateful to our loyal BlackBerry customers and will do everything in our power to provide continued support with your existing carrier or ensure a smooth transition to our other carrier partners," Chen added.
This news doesn't come as much of a surprise, as the two firms' relationship soured earlier this year following an advertising campaign by the US mobile network that the Canadian phone maker perceived as anti-Blackberry.
The ad campaign in question saw T-Mobile offering an iPhone 5S at a discounted price, which it claimed as a "great deal for Blackberry customers. This news didn't go down well with Blackberry which hit out at T-Mobile, slamming the adverts as an "ill-conceived marketing promotion".
However, at the time Chen said that the firm's relationship with T-Mobile would continue, so it seems that Blackberry had a change of heart.
Speaking in February, Chen said, "T-Mobile, I would like to remind you that our long-standing partnership was once productive and profitable for both Blackberry and T-Mobile. I hope we can find a way forward that allows us to serve our shared customers once again.
"Notwithstanding the current challenge, we remain very excited about Blackberry's future." µ
