The farce is strong with this one

A UKRAINIAN MAN in a Darth Vader costume is running as the presidential candidate for the Ukrainian Internet Party (UIP).

Dmitry Golubov is the Ukrainian Vader and he formed the UIP in 2006.

There is a video where Golubov/Vader is roundly welcomed, and a statement from the party that we have had to translate. The message is clear. Vader will do something.

"Darth Vader at the V Congress Internet Party of Ukraine was nominated for president," said the UIP.

"Famous fighter against separatism promises to turn Ukraine into the Empire, to regain lost territory and put the power of dark forces in the service of Ukrainian nation. Let tremble enemies and rivals, the people will go for the strongest, Vader our battle standard, we will win."

The event looks friendly enough. There are Stormtroopers dotted around and at least one Wookie.

Lord Vader is greeted with rapturous applause, a man in a balaclava fires a gun and is dragged from the room. Some party poppers go off, and the new empire introduces itself through a lot of shouting and arm waving.

It appears that the video is about an election process, and it is possible that Vader was standing against Chewbacca. The Wookie does not seem to take Vader's victory badly, which surprised us.

Vader emerges triumphant, we think, and is presented with some flowers by some children, all of which must feel very odd for the made-up, or dead anyway, character from a long, long time ago and very far away. µ
