FACEBOOK HAS NOTIFIED users of its @facebook.com email addresses that their use of those addresses will soon come to an end.
The firm has started emailing users of its bespoke email accounts to let them know that any email sent to them there will just be sent on to the original email address that they used to join Facebook in the first place.
This means that any glamour associated with using the @facebook.com domain in an email address is coming to an end. Facebook confirmed the shutdown to The INQUIRER.
The last time we turned our eye in the direction of the Facebook email system was two years ago, when the firm made it the default for users on its network.
Then Facebook users were surprised to find that they had signed up to a new email account and that Facebook was offering it as their main point of contact without their knowledge. Plus, it didn't work very well.
The email account switcheroo was described as being like a man in the middle attack by at least one aggrieved user.
"Facebook silently inserted themselves into the path of formerly-direct unencrypted communications from people who want to email me," said blogger and Mozilla developer Gervase Markham
"In other contexts, this is known as a Man in the Middle (MITM) attack. What on earth do they think they are playing at?"
Back then, when Facebook thought that people might use it, the social network was vehement that it was the right thing to do.
"We've been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site. in addition to everyone receiving an address, we're also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines," it said.
"Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we're extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address." µ
