PROCESSORS based on a best forgotten architecture are apparently still hitting impressively high clock speeds.
A Chinese overclocker who goes by the name of "Wytiwx" - no, not Weetabix - has set a record for a single core benchmark by cracking open his notebook and cooling it with liquid nitrogen (LN2).
Using a notebook motherboard driving an old school 2.2GHz Celeron 900 CPU with 1023MB of DDR2 SDRAM, Wytiwx managed to overclock the processor's front side bus (FSB) to 363MHz, resulting in a CPU frequency of 4GHz.
Overclocking enthusiast website HWBOT.org, which provided the benchmarking tools, posted the feat.
It said, "This is just one of those days where you come across a new benchmark score and you think 'well, this was unexpected'. Wytiwx from China noticed that the best performance (after overclock) in HWBOT Prime seems to be achieved by the Penryn architecture and found a solution to compete in the single core category."
HWBOT.org exclaimed, "With that setup Wytiwx manages to grab a new top score in the 1xCPU HWBOT Prime ranking. Impressive work!"
Using HWBOT's Prime benchmark, the overclocking record resulted in a 2,668.63 Primes per second (PPS) benchmarking score.
The second highest ranking in HWBOT's overclocking "Prime Hall of Fame" is a score of 2,448.03 PPS achieved using an Intel Celeron LGA775 450 with 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM.

The last time we reported such an impressive Celeron overclocking feat was back in 2009, when the extreme overclockers at Madshrimps managed to overclock an old 3.2GHz Celeron 352 all the way up to 8.1GHz, which at the time, was the second highest clock speed recorded in the HWBOT.org CPU-Z rankings.
Clocking the Celeron all the way up to 8,116MHz was made with the help of a modded Asus P5B Premium motherboard and, again, a pot of liquid nitrogen.
