CHIP DESIGNER AMD has launched its long-awaited Mantle API through Catalyst 14.1 beta drivers and a Battlefield 4 update.
Mantle is a tool for alleviating CPU bottlenecks, such as API overhead or inefficient multi-threading. AMD said this allows systems with entry-level, midrange or otherwise modestly-priced processors to see improvements in graphics processing performance.
"Mantle has been more than two years in the making with esteemed members of the gaming community, such as Johan Andersson and the team at Dice, Dan Baker and Tim Kipp over at Oxide Games or the entire Thief team at Square Enix," said the chip firm.
"Together we created the first graphics API designed by and built for game developers to satisfy their every need in a fresh, modern approach to game programming."
Basically, Mantle is AMD's answer to Directx 11, looking to replace the Microsoft standard with drivers that offer direct access to GPU features and performance.
"Mantle also assists game developers in bringing games to life on multiple platforms by leveraging the commonalities between GCN powered PCs and consoles for a simple game development process," the chip designer claimed.
AMD said that it will provide games such as Battlefield 4 with "the ability to speak the native language of the Graphics Core Next architecture, presenting a deeper level of hardware optimisation".
For example, AMD claimed that in Battlefield 4, an AMD A10-7700K processor with an AMD Radeon R9 290X GPU running at HD 1080p on "ultra settings" should see a 41 percent improvement in performance with Mantle.
AMD unveiled its first Mantle powered generation of "Hawaii" graphics cards and cores, the R9 and R7 series, last September.
Featuring the firm's Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, the AMD Radeon R9 series is aimed at the performance gamer, while the Radeon R7 series is focused on midrange machines. µ
