UK MOBILE OPERATOR Virgin Media became the first to offer free, unlimited calls to 0800 numbers today on a 30 day SIM-only deal.
Building on its existing VIP SIM-only deal, which offers unlimited calls, texts and data for £15 a month, Virgin Media announced the VIP Plus SIM-only plan on Thursday, which for £3 extra a month includes free unlimited calls to 0800, 0870, 0845 and 0808 numbers.
Virgin Media said, "We're delighted to be the first to offer inclusive calls to 08 numbers on a 30 day, SIM-only mobile contract.
"Unlike our competitors who reserve the best SIM-only deals for 12 month contracts, we believe customers should get top bang for their buck on a 30 day plan."
Virgin Media was also keen to point out that the plan will be available for those after either a microSIM or a nanoSIM, good news for iPhone users looking for a deal.
Those after a pay monthly plan with free calls to 0800 numbers can opt for Virgin's VIP tariff, which for £31 a month offers unlimited calls, texts and data as well as free calls to premium numbers.
Virgin Media's announcement comes after Ofcom announced plans to tackle expensive calls to premium numbers, with the UK telecoms watchdog looking to make calls to 0800 numbers free, no matter what device you're calling from or what mobile operator you are using.
Ofcom will require all UK mobile operators to offer free calls to 0800 numbers from July 2015.
You can pick up a VIP Plus SIM-only deal at the Virgin Media website, over the phone or in a Virgin Media store. µ
