UK PUBLIC BROADCASTER the BBC has announced its background information service.
iWonder is "a bold new brand whose mission is to unlock the learning potential of all BBC content", according to BBC executive product manager Andrew Pipes.
The iWonder service is a progression from the days when fact sheets for television programmes could be obtained in return for a "stamped addressed envelope". It is an interactive service available instantly, as opposed to a piece of paper available within 28 days.
Designed as a "sit forward" offering to engage viewers who want to learn more about a particular topic, the web-based service has been configured to work well on a variety of screen sizes.
Kicking off the scheme is a series relating to the BBC's season of documentaries on the First World War. Contributors include Dan Snow, Kate Adie and Gareth Malone.
Part of the BBC's charter is the requirement to provide universal access to its services regardless of access method. The blog post goes on to explain that in an effort to ensure the same user experience across computer, tablet and phone devices, a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to implement dynamic page loading, that is, loading mobile sized images first and then analysing the screen resolution before deciding what additional content to include.
The BBC iWonder team promised "visual quizzes, clickable infographics, and plenty of other digital toys to play with, as the library of options available to our production team grows," with further topics to be added in the coming weeks.
