JAPANESE ELECTRONICS MAKER Sony unveiled the 6in Xperia T2 Ultra smartphone on Tuesday, possibly timed to steal Motorola's limelight.

The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra is a more affordable alternative to the Xperia Z Ultra, switching out that handset's 6.4in HD 1080p screen for a cheaper 6in HD 720p version.

There are some downgrades under the bonnet too, with the Xperia T2 Ultra having a quad-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1GB of RAM and a slightly downsized 3,000mAh battery.

Despite its large size, the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra measures just 7.7mm thick and tips the scales at 171g, pretty light for a phone of this size. The display also uses Sony's Triluminos screen technology, which means that it should be better than the screen on the average budget smartphone, and there's also support for 4G LTE included.

Sony Mobile director of Xperia marketing Calum MacDougall said, "Xperia T2 Ultra will lead the category through its combination of advanced display and camera technologies, it will bring large-screen entertainment in an amazingly portable form factor and it will do it all whilst providing incredible value for money.

"Its large HD display will deliver big screen entertainment on the go whilst the efficiency of the design will allow it to remain the worlds most portable large screen smartphone."

The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra also features a 13MP Exmor R rear-facing camera, a 1.1MP camera on the front, Bluetooth 4.0, Google's Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean mobile operating system and, for those who opt for the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual model, a dual-SIM slot.

Along with the Xperia T2 Ultra Sony also unveiled the Xperia E1, an affordable 4in smartphone that has a 100db speaker.

Sony has not announced availability details for either smartphone yet.

Update
Carphone Warehouse has since revealed that the smartphone will be hitting UK shelves in April. µ
