CES: Nvidia's 192-core Tegra K1 chip will match PS4 and Xbox One performance

LAS VEGAS: CHIP DESIGNER Nvidia announced its latest flagship chip at CES on Sunday, the 192-core Tegra K1, which the firm claims can match the performance of the Playstation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One games consoles.

Described by the company as a "super chip" that can bridge the gap between mobile computing and supercomputing, the Nvidia Tegra K1, which replaces the Tegra 4, features 192 cores and is based on the firm's Kepler architecture.

The firm boasts that the chip will be capable of bringing next generation PC gaming to mobile devices, and Nvidia claimed that it will be able to match the PS4 and Xbox One consoles' graphics performance.

Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and CEO of Nvidia said, "Over the past two decades, Nvidia invented the GPU and has developed more graphics technologies than any other company.

"With Tegra K1, we're bringing that heritage to mobile. It bridges the gap for developers, who can now build next gen games and apps that will run on any device."

Epic Games has been quick to confirm that it will bring its Unreal Engine 4 to Tegra K1 for game development.

Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games said, "From here onward, I think we're going to see the performance and feature gap between mobile and PC high-end gaming continue to narrow to the point where the difference between the platforms really blurs."

Nvidia's Tegra K1 isn't all about gaming, as Huang hinted that the chip could see the company entering new markets, namely those where Google's Android operating system already features. This suggests that Nvidia's K1 chip could crop up in Smart TVs and cars in the future, for example.

Nvidia will offer the Tegra K1 in two versions; a 32-bit quad-core, 4-Plus-1 ARM Cortex A15 CPU, and a Nvidia designed 64-bit dual Super Core CPU. The 32-bit version is expected to appear in devices in the first half of 2014, while the 64-bit version is likely to appear towards the end of the year. µ
