Xbox One vs PS4

JAPANESE HARDWARE MAKER Sony's Playstation 4 (PS4) console outsold Microsoft's Xbox One in the UK last year.

We might be only two days into 2014, but Sony's PS4 can proudly claim the title of the UK's best-selling games console. That's according to figures from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) reported by gaming website MCV, which show that the Sony shifted 116,000 more PS4 consoles than Microsoft sold Xbox Ones.

Sony reportedly sold 530,000 PS4 games consoles in the UK in just five weeks, while Microsoft sold 364,000 Xbox One units. According to ERA's figures, this saw PS4 hardware sales generate £181.8m in the UK, while Xbox One made £144.5m.

This means that Paddy Power was right with its prediction that the PS4 would outsell the Xbox One in the UK over Christmas. We're assuming Currys and PC World isn't feeling quite so smug, with the retailer having predicted that Microsoft's console would be the best-seller.

ERA director general Kim Bayley said, "Games continues to deliver digital sales strongly, but it was disappointing that Xbox One and PS4 came so late in 2013 and then huge demand meant stock sold out quickly.

"Retailers will be working hard in 2014 to maintain the sales momentum of these two great new pieces of kit."

It's not all good news for Sony, however, as the statistics also show that Microsoft shifted more consoles globally, having sold more than two million units worldwide, 111,111 units per day since making its debut on 22 November.
