ONE-TIME Microsoft CEO Bill Gates took part in a Reddit Secret Santa giveaway and awarded one lucky user a personalised note and the sponsorship of a cow.
Gates must have been thinking of something else when the rules of Secret Santa were read out, because he rather gave the game away and forgot the secret bit by including a photo and a signed note.
Reddit users were entered into a lottery and were awarded gifts at random. Reddit user NY1227 said her jaw hit the floor when she opened her gift and a photo of the bespectacled ex-CEO fell out.
"Oh... wait. Holy shit. Time out. And then it finally hit me. All the presents I had just torn open, the charity – everything – was from Bill GATES. My jaw hit the EVER-LOVING FLOOR," she said, in a post on Reddit.
Also included was a travel book, with personal inscription, and some sage words of advice about the importance of our bovine friends.
"I want to start by giving a HUGE THANK YOU to Mr Bill Gates for an amazing gift and secret santa experience. Bill – you ROCK (can I call you Bill?! I feel like we're friends now!) I am so very, very grateful for the amazing and thoughtful gift you have picked for me!," she wrote in a post on Reddit.
"I thought Bill sounded like a friendly fellow. In fact, I had this whole image of this poor guy named Bill trying to navigate my wishlist full of makeup, nail polish [and] glittery things to buy me. Quite frankly I felt bad for this 'Bill' since I'm a self-identified pain in the ass to shop for. I finally opened the card and realised that 'Bill' (I use quotes, because like I said, I still didn't realise that this was THE Bill) had donated to a charity on my behalf."
The Reddit user gave Bill Gates a 10 out of 10 score for present-giving, presumably she forgave him the spoiler, and apologised for at least one of the items that was on her original, cow-free list.
"Ps," she added. "Sorry for the Apple iPad on my wishlist, that was really awkward." µ
