JAPANESE GAMES MAKER Nintendo's Wii U console could outsell the Xbox One and Playstation 4 (PS4) consoles this Christmas, according to retailer Play.com.
Yes, we are sceptical about this too, but Play.com owner Rakuten has actually said that it expects the Wii U, along with the iPad, to sell more units than the Xbox One and PS4, despite both of the next generation games consoles racking up more than one million day one sales.
Rakuten said to MCV that it saw a 75 percent spike in Wii U sales in October and expects this to continue up until Christmas. The retailer cites a Twitter analysis, which has apparently revealed that its Wii U console and Apple iPad are "the most talked about presents for children this Christmas".
Rakuten added that if this continues, the Xbox One and PS4 are unlikely to be able to keep up with the Wii U this Christmas.
It said, "The marketplace's social media analysis surprisingly showed that the brand new Playstation 4 and Xbox One consoles are trailing in second and third place respectively behind the Wii U and iPad.
"This is despite the fact that both new consoles sold out on Rakuten's Play.com during Black Friday, which have since been restocked. It appears that those on the hunt for the latest consoles are gamers rather than consumers buying for their loved ones."
We're still not convinced, however, and despite new games such as Super Mario 3D World likely driving gamers to the Wii U console, Play.com's numbers don't seem to match recent Wii U sales figures.
Most recently, Bloomberg reported that the latest Wii U sales failed to match Nintendo's expectations. µ
