CHIP DESIGNER Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 805 processor on Wednesday, which it claims is the first processor designed to deliver 4K quality video, imaging and graphics to mobile devices.
The new chip features the Adreno 420 GPU, which Qualcomm claims is 40 percent more powerful than its previous GPU. What makes the Adreno 420 GPU special is that it supports new hardware tessellation and geometry shaders for 4K rendering, which the firm says produces "more realistic scenes and objects [and] user interface" at lower power.
"The Snapdragon 805 processor is the first mobile processor to offer system-level Ultra HD support, 4K video capture and playback and enhanced dual camera Image Signal Processors (ISPs), for superior performance, multitasking, power efficiency and mobile user experiences," Qualcomm said.
Said to be the highest performing Snapdragon processor to date, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 features a Krait 450 quad-core CPU, which the firm said is the first mobile CPU to run at speeds of up to 2.5GHz. There's also memory bandwidth support up to 25.6GBps, Qualcomm said, for super fast multimedia and web browsing performance.
The Snapdragon 805 is all about streaming more video content at higher quality using less power. It supports Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) for video post-processing, and is also the first to introduce hardware 4K HEVC (H.265) decode for mobile for low power HD video playback.
There's also support for Gpixels throughput to increase camera speed and imaging quality.
"[The] sensor processing with gyro integration enables image stabilisation for sharper, crisper photos," Qualcomm added.
Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 805 processor is "sampling now and expected to be available in commercial devices by the first half of 2014". µ
