THE ROCKSTAR CONSORTIUM consortium, a business cartel made up of firms including Microsoft and Apple, has started using its Nortel patents to sue firms that are not part of its gang.
The consortium, which also includes Blackberry, Ericsson and Sony, was given the green light to buy the patents in 2011 and after a bidding war with Google splashed out $4.5bn on them.
"We are pleased to emerge from this review process, and are looking forward to working with technology related companies to provide them with access to Rockstar's technology," said John Veschi, CEO of Rockstar then.
"The entire industry has benefitted from Nortel's groundbreaking innovations, and we are eager to work with them to establish licenses enabling the continued use of this technology."
The Rockstar Consortium's homepage makes its patent business clear and talks up the licensing opportunities it offers.
"Fostering innovation works hand-in-hand with the need for patent protection," it says. "Great ideas and the investment behind them deserve to be rewarded and respected."
The group is doing all it can to make sure that its investment in Nortel's patents stretches as far as it can, and is suing Google and Samsung.
According to Reuters Rockstar is suing Google for playing fast and loose with seven patents that cover the rather key issue of linking searches with adverts.
Reuters reported that Rockstar is seeking damages because of continued willful infringement.
"Despite losing in its attempt to acquire the patents in suit at auction, Google has infringed and continues to infringe," Rockstar said in its complaint.
Google hasn't commented, we are waiting to hear from Rockstar. Samsung at least made it clear that something was happening.
"After reviewing the complaint, we will determine which measures to take," it said in a statement. µ
