FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia announced the Lumia 1520 phablet at its Nokia World conference in Abu Dhabi, as its highest-specification smartphone to date.

The Lumia 1520 is Nokia's first phablet device, and shows that as well as trying to crack the tablet market with the Lumia 2520, the firm is also challenging Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and the HTC One Max.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 has a 6in HD 1020p resolution display with Nokia's Clearblack technology. This is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and the latest version of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system, which adds an extra column of apps on the Live Tile homescreen among a handful of other useful features such as Screen Lock and Driving Mode.

Price, release date and availability
At its Nokia World conference, the firm announced that the Lumia 1520 smartphone will fetch $749 SIM-free, which translates to around £460.

The firm has now finally announced UK release date details. The Nokia Lumia 1520 will be available in the UK on contract from approximately £38 per month, the firm said, and will be available from a number of retailers and operators - including Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4u, O2 and Vodafone, from 6 December.

Despite saying it will be available for 6 December, Carphone Warehouse started sending out orders of the Lumia 1520 on 4 December, with its website showing the phone as in stock.

The retailer is offering the Nokia Lumia 1520 for pre-order on a 24 month £38 contract. This comes with unlimited texts and minutes, and 2GB of 3G data. For those after 4G, the phone will cost £19.99 on a £48 Vodafone tariff, which comes with 12GB of monthly LTE data.

O2 and Vodafone are yet to start taking pre-orders direct, and Phones 4u is also yet to start taking orders for the phone.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is also available to pick up SIM free from a handful of UK retailers. Alternate has slapped the Lumia 1520 with a £699 SIM free price-tag, while However, Unlocked Mobiles has claimed that it won't cost this much - having slapped the phone with a £594.98 SIM free price. The Nokia Lumia 1520 is now in stock at most SIM free retailers.
