MEMORY MAKER Samsung has announced its fifth generation memory modules for data centres dubbed "Green DDR4", which it claims offers a 15 percent performance boost over the firm's previous DDR3 memory.
Announcing the news at the Memory Solutions Forum 2013 conference in Frankfurt today, Samsung said Green DDR4 will deliver "high speed, low power and high reliability", with a server data transfer speed of 2,133Mbps compared to the firm's DDR3 performance limit of 1,866Mbps. According to the firm, these updates also ensure the memory uses 24 percent less energy.
For even better performance, Samsung suggested that data centres take on its Green DDR along with its new PCIe solid state disk (SSD) drive, which it also announced today and touts six times faster performance than that of a 600MBps SATA SSD, with a data transfer speed of 4GBps. This is said to increase the data transfer rate by 67 percent and expand energy efficiency in data centres by about two and a half times.
"A combination of Samsung's DDR4 and PCIe SSD green memory solutions will enhance the performance of server systems approximately 1.6 times and quadruple system capacity by eliminating unnecessary data duplication in the enterprise storage systems," Samsung said.
"If all server systems adopted Samsung's fifth generation green memory solutions, an anticipated power savings of 45 terawatts per hour could be achieved."
According to the Korean memory maker, this would equate to six billion people saving the power needed for everyday smartphone use for two years.
Next on the horizon for Samsung is expanded high speed DDR4 DRAM, which will eventually offer DDR4 memory with a data transfer speed of 3,200Mbps. Next generation PCIe SSDs are also said to be in development, based on Samsung's 3D V-NAND technology. µ
