GAMES CONSOLE MAKER Microsoft is making a gift of its old Xbox 360 smash hit Halo 3 and is offering it free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers.
The game will be free until the end of October, when Microsoft might offer another old game.
The firm has been offering free games for some time, and other recent downloads have included Crackdown and Assassin's Creed II.
Halo 3 replaces the less exciting Might & Magic Clash of Heroes, which was free for Xbox Live Gold members from 1 October.

We played a couple of games, Lone Wolves and Team Slayer, but there were not many other people playing. In the case of the former we were given a player pool of 187 and offered a game with three rivals. Team Slayer was better and there we found about 500 opponents.
When it was first released, six years and one month ago, Halo 3 was embraced by Xbox 360 gamers, and one million of them lined up to play on the first day.
As well as excellent multiplayer, Halo 3 has a fine campaign experience featuring the stalwart Master Chief. µ
