GADGET DESIGNER Apple has sent out invitations for an event on 22 October where it's likely to unveil two new iPad tablets.
The invitation doing the rounds on Twitter doesn't give much away. It features the tagline, "We still have a lot to cover." This could be a subtle reference to some fancy new iPad covers, but probably isn't. It's also pretty colourful and features translucent effects, although this is likely a nod to Apple's new iOS 7 mobile operating system.
While the invitation doesn't tell us much, the rumour mill has provided us with all we need to know, pointing towards a new iPad Mini and the iPad 5. There's also talk that Apple will use the 22 October event to detail its new Mac Pro device and its Mac OS X Mavericks operating system.
The iPad Mini 2 will reportedly improve on its predecessor with a Retina display and an A6 chip under the bonnet, along with Apple's iOS 7 operating system and a built-in fingerprint scanner. The iPad 5 will be an update to Apple's full-sized iPad lineup, with speculation hinting that the tablet will also feature a fingerprint sensor and Apple's new 64-bit chip. Both tablets reportedly will be available in new gold models.
While this is good news for Apple fans, it's not such good news for Nokia and Microsoft. 22 October is also the date of Nokia World 2013, where the Finnish phone firm reportedly will show off six new Windows devices including a 6in phone and Windows 8.1 tablets. This is also the date that Microsoft's new Surface tablets go on sale, with Apple seemingly looking to lure users to its new iPad tablets.
Check back on 22 October for all the latest. µ
