THE BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION (BBC) launched its Playlister service in beta in the UK on Wednesday, complete with Spotify, Deezer and Youtube integration.
BBC Playlister went live at 11.30am, and the firm showed off the service today at an event in London that The INQUIRER attended.
Available now on desktop, tablet and mobile web browsers, the service lets users browse the BBC's vast catalogue of music and save those tracks that they like to their own personal playlists. This can then be exported into Spotify, Deezer or Youtube.
A Spotify representative speaking at Wednesday's event said, "BBC Playlister adds an extra level of texture to our service, and we're delighted to be part of it. We've seen a clear shift from ownership to access, and this is a really cool way for users to discover new music."
Much like on iTunes, users can play a 30 second preview of a song before saving it to listen to later, and users can browse songs from the broadcaster's radio shows, and tracks that featured in BBC shows such as The Voice.
App based music access will be coming soon too, the BBC announced, saying that it has plans to integrate Playlister into its iPlayer Radio app in November. The firm added that it has a lot more features and updates planned for the app, and it told The INQUIRER that it is open to adding new partners to the service, hinting that it might add iTunes Radio support when the service arrives in the UK, reportedly in early 2014.
To coincide with the launch, the BBC also released a Playlister Spotify app where users can keep an eye on tracks and follow DJs such as Zane Lowe and Lauren Lavern to see what they are listening to.
Speaking at today's event, Radio One DJ Zane Lowe said that the BBC's new Playlister feature has the potential to change radio has we know it.
He said, "For me, BBC Playlister is hallelujah time. Connecting users to music is what I am passionate about, and that's exactly what this new service does.
"Playlister gives users a chance to take ownership of the music they love in a whole now way, and it's going to have a massive impact impact the way we do our radio shows. We can really start to listen to what our listeners love, and they can start to shape our shows." µ
