KOREAN SMARTPHONE MAKER Samsung unveiled the world's first curved smartphone on Wednesday, the Galaxy Round, beating local rival LG to it.
The Samsung Galaxy Round, as the name suggests, features a curved OLED screen, measuring 5.7in with HD 1080p resolution. Those after a bendy phone might be disappointed though, as the display is not flexible, with the handset's curvature instead implemented so the device is "more comfortable to grip". Apparently.
Samsung has filled the phone with features to take advantage of the screen's curvature. A software feature called Roll Effect lets you tilt the handset when it is placed flat on a surface to view things like the time, missed calls and battery level, while a Gravity Effect feature allows users to visually interact with the screen by tilting the device.
Samsung has also furnished the device with features called Bounce UX and Side Mirror. The firm explained, "For music, the Bounce UX enables users to control their music. When the Galaxy Round's display is off while the music player is running, a short press to the left of the device will play the previous track while a short press to the right will play the next track.
"For pictures and videos, the Side Mirror feature enables users to gain access to list of the album content with a left and right tilt."
Beyond the 5.7in curved display and related software features, the Samsung Galaxy Round matches the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 in terms of hardware specifications. There's a quad-core 2.3GHz processor, 3GB of RAM and Google's Android 4.3 Jelly Bean mobile operating system, along with dual 13MP and 2MP cameras, a 2,800mAh battery and support for LTE-A.
The Samsung Galaxy Round will launch in Korea this week, priced at around £620. There's no word on a US or UK release yet.
Samsung's launch of the Galaxy Round sees it beating LG to the punch, with the firm having announced earlier this week that its first OLED phone is also in development.
