GAMES CONSOLE MAKER Sony's Playstation 4 (PS4) will launch with a companion Playstation App for iOS and Android that will offer second screen gaming.
Sony offered a glimpse of the app on Thursday, and detailed some of its features in a blog post. The firm boasted that the free application will let PS4 owners "take the Playstation experience with them" when they are away from their console.
The app will allow PS4 users to do things like stay in touch with friends, compare achievements and view friends' activity, including records of live gameplay streamed from their PS4 consoles.
Sony president Shuhei Yoshida said, "It's an application that anyone can download for free on iOS and Android devices. There are a variety of things you can do with it. You can connect to your Playstation profile, and send messages - even voice messages, to you friends between your smartphone and PS4."
Perhaps most interestingly, the app will offer second-screen gaming, a bit like the Wii U Gamepad. This feature reportedly will only work on games with the feature enabled, and Yoshida hinted that it's likely small game developers that will implement the option.
He said, "Smaller developers can use Playstation App to connect to PS4 and load an application, like drawing software for example, so that you don't have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It's open to all PS4 developers to use."
Full details of the Playstation app are expected to be revealed later, and there's no word on a release date so far. However, we're going to put our money on 29 November. µ
