Hoax fools iPhone users into thinking that iOS 7 makes their device waterproof

We worry about the human race

A FAKE ADVERT claiming that updating to iOS 7 will make iPhone and iPad devices waterproof has worryingly fooled users into destroying their devices.

The advert, which is believed to have debuted on forum website 4Chan, reportedly has been doing the rounds on social media websites over the weekend, tricking gullible iDevice owners into believing their iPhones are now waterproof, like the Sony Xperia Z1.

In fairness, the advert does look pretty convincing, featuring Apple's signature minimalistic design and font style. The ad reads, "Update to iOS 7 and become waterproof.

"In an emergency, a smart switch will shut off the phone's power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry."

While it all looks fairly convincing, we are concerned about the gullibility of human beings, as a number of users have been fooled into dunking their iThings in water to test this 'new feature'.

We've managed to hunt down some people on Twitter who don't mind admitting that they sent their iPhone for a swim. One user wrote on the social network, "OK whoever said iOS 7 is waterproof GO **** YOURSELF," while another wrote, "Someone told me to download iOS 7 so my iPhone becomes waterproof. I am now tweeting from my PC."

It's unclear how many people fell for the trick, but given that there are now 200 million Apple devices running iOS , we're pretty sure that those two users who weren't too ashamed to share their experience on Twitter are not alone.

Apple has not yet commented on the hoax, but we'll guess it is not happy with the prankster who fooled users into destroying their iPhones and iPads - with the bottom of the advert claiming that the waterproofing would be covered by the firm's warranty policy. µ
