JAPANESE GAMES CONSOLE MAKER Sony is predicting sales of five million for its Playstation 4 (PS4) console in its first fiscal year of sales.
The firm reckons that it will shift the hardware by next April Fool's Day, 1 April 2014. It made the announcement at the Tokyo Game Show during its keynote address.
Although the console will go on sale before the end of this year, the firm had its home market of Japan in mind when it comes to sales, and Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios explained that Sony meant the end of fiscal 2014. The console will not go on sale in Japan until next February.
It took the Sony Playstation seven months to shift less than five million, and it took the Microsoft Xbox almost a year.
Neither console firm has released a new model for years, though, and both are due to start selling their next generation consoles in the run up to the holiday season.
A December spike is very likely as parents grant Christmas wishes, but Sony will have to make sure that its hardware and its games selection are compelling enough to keep the momentum going.
The PS4 does have an edge over the Microsoft Xbox One when it comes to price, and the firm made the most of early controversies surrounding the rival games console.
According to the US retailer Gamestop, the PS4 is already outselling the Xbox One in terms of pre-order interest. The firm said that a "first to know" PS4 list has 1.5 million members, while the Xbox One equivalent has less than half that number. µ
