GAMES FIRM Rovio has released the latest title in its Angry Birds series, a sequel to the Star Wars edition.
Angry Birds Star Wars 2 comes out at the same time as Apple's iOS 7 mobile operating system and is available for iPads, iPhones, Windows Phone 8, Android and the Amazon Kindle Fire. It costs 69p on the iTunes App Store and a comparable amount elsewhere.
Players can take on the role of Jedi birds, or, if they prefer, join what Rovio is calling the Pork side, what Star Wars fans would call the Dark Side. This gives players control of pig characters including the Emperor, who shoots lightning bolts, and Boba Fett, who fires rockets.
"Angry Birds Star Wars II combines the rich worlds of both Angry Birds and Star Wars in a unique way featuring fan favorite characters from both the dark and light side of the Force," said Rovio EVP of Entertainment Jami Laes.
"We have taken the gameplay to a whole new level, giving our fans the option to play as both the birds and the pigs. We've heavily invested in the longevity of the franchise and have great updates already lined up for the coming months."
A deal with a physical games firm will see Angry Birds Star Wars gear turn up in the high street, and this is good news for Rovio.
"We are also excited to introduce the amazing new Telepods from Hasbro," added Laes. "For the first time ever our new characters will not only appear in future game updates, but also on store shelves."
Although physical toys will tie into the addictive mobile game, mercifully you will not have to invest in them. If you do you will find that they will work like the console games Skylanders and Disney Infinity and will let players bung new characters into a game.
Angry Birds merchandise is of course everywhere, and you can buy anything from t-shirts to a toothbrush. µ
