POWERLINE SPECIALIST Devolo has announced that its flagship dLAN 500 WiFi powerline adapter is available in the UK, following a successful launch in mainland Europe.
A hybrid between traditional powerline and WiFi technologies, the dLAN 500 WiFi Kit eliminates "weak spots", Devolo claims, by rebroadcasting a strong WiFi signal through the power mains, rather than simply boosting a weak one.
The hybrid WiFi powerline technology appears to be aimed at people who can’t resist the urge to play multi-player online games in the bath or take photos of their shed, or who perhaps live in caves with thick stone walls that can’t be penetrated by a traditional WiFi router.
With apps available for Android and iOS, the dLAN 500 is capable of selecting the strongest access point among those on the home network and provide seamless switching for each - meaning that, in theory, you’ll always get the best reception possible.
There is even a handy button on each unit for people who want to control their network manually, along with a range of nerdier options such as MAC filtering, guest controls, scheduling and parental controls.
The dLAN 500 range consists of either a starter kit - a base unit and one WiFi adapter - for £79.99, or a three pack - a base unit with two WiFi adapters - for £124.99. Individual additional WiFi adapters cost £49.99 a pop.
At this price point, the dLAN 500 doesn’t exactly represent a cheap and cheerful solution to an widespread problem, but might make life a bit easier for offices, home workers, people who live in sprawling mansions or old houses carved into the sides of chalk cliffs, and people who really can’t bear the thought of being out of internet contact for even a moment. µ
