Sony Xperia Z1 with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

JAPANESE PHONE MAKER Sony unveiled the Xperia Z1 at IFA on Wednesday, its latest flagship Android smartphone and sequel to the Sony Xperia Z.

The Sony Xperia Z1 is arguably the firm's most impressively specified smartphone to date, featuring a 5in full HD 1080p touchscreen, a quad-core 2.3GHz processor and Google's Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean mobile operating system. Like its predecessor, the Xperia Z1 is also resistant against water and dust.

The handset's main talking point however is its 20.7MP rear-facing camera, although unlike the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and despite rumours stating otherwise, it is not capable of shooting Ultra HD 4K video. However,  Sony has got one up on its rivals with the unveiling of two snap-on lenses, the QX10 and the QX100, transforming the handset - and other smartphones - into a full-on camera device.

The Sony Xperia Z1 also features 16GB of internal storage expandable via microSD card, NFC, 4G LTE support and a 3,000mAh battery.

For those thinking about buying the Sony Xperia Z1, below is everything you need to know about the handset's price, release date and where to buy. Keep this article bookmarked as we'll be updating as soon as we get some more information.

It will come as little surprise that as an LTE device, EE will be offering the Sony Xperia Z1. The mobile operator has even aleady started to take pre-orders.

The best deal seems to be EE's £41 tariff, which comes with unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB of monthly 4G data, although there is a £29.99 upfront cost for the Sony Xperia Z1. However, for every pre-order EE is chucking in a free Sony Smartwatch 2 worth £149.99. There's no word on a release date yet, but EE is advising customers that it could take up to 30 days for delivery.

The handset is also available on 3G-only plans with Orange and T-Mobile.

UK operator O2 has been quick to announce that it too will be selling the Sony Xperia Z1, but hasn't released any information on its pricing or release date yet, saying that it will arrive on its network "later this year".

Although it hasn't switched on its LTE network yet, Three has said that a 4G-ready version of the Sony Xperia Z1 will be available on its network from launch. There are no details on pricing or release date yet.

Unsurprisingly, Vodafone will also be offering the Sony Xperia Z1, but it has remained quiet on further details.
