GADGET DESIGNER Apple is rumoured to have teamed up with two Taiwanese suppliers to begin the making of its so-called iWatch wearable smart device, with plans to launch to market in the second half of 2014.
There are also mutterings that the Cupertino company will make a rather substantial 63.4 million of the smart watches in 2014, partnering with manufacturers Inventec and Quanta who will split the iWatch orders in a 60:40 ratio, respectively. If true, that sales figure would come close to Apple's total iPod sales from 2008 to 2010.
The news comes from an analyst for CIMB Securities Limited, Wang Wanli during an interview with The Commercial Times. According to Wanli, Apple will price the iWatch at $199, translating to around £128. However, with taxes and conversion rates, we'd expect it will sell in the UK in the region of £150.
Not much else is known about Apple's iWatch, though, and given its size, there's probably not going to be much to find out.
Apple has not yet indicated whether it is working on the device, but in July the company filed an application to register "iWatch" as a trademark in Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Taiwan under product category for a computer or watch device.
If speculation is to be believed, the iWatch will act as a 'second screen' for the iPhone and iPad, enabling users to glance at their wrists to see missed calls, messages and social media notifications. There are also likely to be music controls for music playing through an iPhone, for example, which it will do using Bluetooth connectivity.
We also know that Apple's iWatch will face competition. Samsung has already confirmed that it's working on a smart watch device to act as a companion for its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. LG and Microsoft, too are rumoured to be building a similar device, while Sony announced its second generation Smartwatch in London earlier this year. Wearable tech is definitely the next trend on the horizon. µ
