AMD announces a dual-core 6W x86 chip for fanless applications

Includes Radeon graphics and ECC memory support

CHIP DESIGNER AMD has announced a dual-core x86 system on chip (SoC) that has a 6W power rating for fanless industrial applications.

AMD's G series SoCs are the firm's main low-power chips that are intended for use in industrial applications such as automation, thin clients, industrial tablets and casino gaming machines. The firm has announced the GX-210JA dual-core 1GHz x86 SoC with a 6W TDP, and it claims an average power usage of 3W allowing it to be used in fanless tablets.

AMD has already said that it is working on ARM based embedded processors but its x86 embedded chips are likely to remain a key focus and sales generator for the firm for some time yet. AMD's ability to ramp power down power to 6W for a dual-core x86 processor that includes a Radeon HD 8180 GPU clocked at 225MHz, support for ECC memory and an integrated I/O controller is impressive.

AMD also announced a further five G Series SoCs including the 9W dual-core GX-210HA, which has the same 1GHz clock speed on the x86 cores but sees the GPU clock speed bumped up to 300MHz. The firm told The INQUIRER that the chip can also be used in fanless designs.

AMD VP and GM of Embedded Systems Arun Iyengar said, "AMD Embedded G-Series SoC products offer unparalleled compute, graphics and I/O integration, resulting in fewer board components, low-power use, and reduced complexity and overhead cost.

"The new GX-210JA operates at an average of approximately three watts, enabling a new generation of fanless designs for content-rich, multimedia and traditional workload processing."

Dell's Wyse division, one of the biggest thin client vendors, said it is looking at AMD's GX-210JA for its products.

For AMD, producing dual-core x86 chips down to 6W TDP verified for demanding industrial applications should provide a springboard for the firm's other upcoming chips that are intended for fanless consumer electronics devices. µ
