UPSTART TABLET VENDOR Microsoft is planning to launch refreshed Surface RT and Surface Pro devices within the next year, a presentation slide shown at the firm's Worldwide Partner Conference in Texas has revealed.
Entitled "FY2014 Biggest Innovation Year Ever!", the slide outlined the firm's plans for the rest of 2013 and into 2014, including an "Update to Surface RT" and an "Update to Surface Pro" along with other plans such as new Windows 8.1 devices and a focus on Xbox One, Kinect and Skype.
Microsoft's roadmap slide was presented during a keynote by Microsoft COO Kevin Turner in which the executive gave a brief glimpse at upcoming updates for the company's consumer businesses.
The presentation slide also hints that we're likely to see new accessories and new accessory colours - probably more keyboard choices - for the Surface line at some point in the future.
Unfortunately the slide doesn't provide any information as to when we can expect to see these updates rolled out. We have contacted Microsoft to see if it can shed any more light on the matter and give us some dates.
It's likely that the information we can see on the slide points towards upcoming Intel Haswell processors in Windows 8.1 devices and a second Surface RT tablet this year that will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, as reported by Bloomberg last month.
Rumoured to be called Surface RT 2, Microsoft's upcoming tablet update supposedly will also support LTE 4G connectivity as Microsoft looks to add mobile internet capability to its not so popular tablet lineup. µ
