JAPANESE GAMES VENDOR Nintendo has admitted that it was the victim of a security breach earlier this summer.
The firm has posted an explanation in Japanese on its website. It said that the problem could have affected 29,000 accounts.
The attack happened in early June and lasted a few weeks. There were millions of attempts made to hack into Club Nintendo accounts and the hackers were successful 23,926 times.
Some personal information could have been taken, and the Nintendo announcement mentions home and email addresses and other data as being at risk.
Although the Nintendo Club is open to Nintendo users, it does not require them to hand over any financial information, so we can be sure that no such booty was taken. Nintendo will reset users' passwords and will ask its club members to choose an alternative.
So far we have been unable to ascertain whether this was a localised problem and only related to Japanese accounts or whether the implications are wider. Club Nintendo users are advised to keep an eye out for an email notification.
This is the second warning to hit gamers this week, as earlier we learned that French game publisher Ubisoft also suffered at the hands of miscreants.
"We recently found that one of our web sites was exploited to gain unauthorised access to some of our online systems. We instantly took steps to close off this access, investigate the incident and begin restoring the integrity of any compromised systems," Ubisoft admitted in a forum post.
"During this process, we learned that data had been illegally accessed from our account database, including user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords." µ
