CHIPMAKER Intel has incorporated support for Linux in its System Studio Extended development environment.
Intel typically receives the most attention for its processors however the firm spends a lot of time and effort in producing developer tools that the firm optimises for its processors. Now the chipmaker has introduced Linux support in its System Studio Extended developer environment.
Intel's System Studio Extended is a suite of applications that the firm promotes as the best way to optimise for Intel processors. The firm's latest update is meant to improve support for those developers that work on embedded Linux applications that eventually will run on Intel Atom processors.
Intel includes its highly rated C and C++ compilers along with debugging tools such as its JTAG and GDB debugger. However perhaps the firm's most important optimisation tool is its Vtune Amplifier, which provides the developer with information on how the application affects the power features of certain Intel processors.
Intel's support of Linux in its System Studio Extended environment is a testament to how important the operating system is in the embedded systems market, which in the past has relied on cumbersome, proprietary operating systems that foster lock-in. It also shows the firm's intention to drive its processors into more embedded systems, a high volume and extremely lucrative market.
The problem for developers is that in the embedded market ARM chips - not Intel's Xeon, Core or Atom processors - are the most commonly used, meaning time consuming optimisations made for Intel's processors could be largely useless unless Intel makes significant gains in the market. µ
