CHIP DESIGNER Nvidia has announced an all-Kepler Geforce GTX 700M series in preparation for Intel's Haswell chips.
Nvidia's previous generation Geforce 600M series was a mish-mash of parts, with some being based on the firm's well received Kepler architecture while others were still using Fermi. Now the firm has announced that all parts in its Geforce GTX 700M series will be based on its Kepler GPU architecture.
Nvidia is aiming its Geforce GTX 700M series parts at laptops running Intel's Haswell processors. The firm said its chips will provider a significant graphics boost on top of Intel's revamped GPU, which is not all that surprising given that Intel's GPUs are still expected to perform a generation or more behind mainstream GPUs from both AMD and Nvidia.
Nvidia's range topping Geforce GTX 780M will sport 1,536 cores clocked at 823MHz, with the ability for the laptop maker to set a boost clock depending on system cooling. The firm has included support for up to 4GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 2.5GHz on a 256bit memory bus.
On the other end of the scale, Nvidia's Geforce GTX 760M and Geforce GTX 765M are similar parts, both sporting 768 cores but clocked at 657MHz and 850MHz respectively. Nvidia has clocked the memory of the two chips, both 128bit GDDR5 with a capacity of 2GB, at 2GHz.
Nvidia's final Geforce GTX 700M chip, the GTX 770M sits roughly in between the GTX 765M and the GTX 780M with 960 cores clocked at 811MHz. The firm has upped the memory bandwidth to 192bit but kept the 3GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 2GHz.
Nvidia claimed that its Geforce chips will end up in most Haswell powered laptops, though given that Intel is pretty keen to push Haswell in its thin and light ultrabook branded devices, it remains to be seen how many firms bother putting a proper GPU into svelte laptops. Nvidia claims it has Geforce 700M chips that can fit into thin and light machines, so if system builders decide to use them perhaps Haswell ultrabook users will finally be able to think about gaming on their laptops. µ
