KOREAN PHONE MAKER Samsung has told The INQUIRER that the Galaxy S4's Knox security software is now live, with its availability dependent on B2B contracts.
In late April, we reported that the Samsung Galaxy S4 would ship without Samsung's Knox security features enabled, due to issues related to software testing. At the time, Samsung told us Knox would be switched on "at a later date", slated for July according to online reports.
However, it seems that the firm has rapidly brought forward this release date, as Samsung told The INQUIRER on Tuesday that its Knox security feature, which offers functionality similar to that of Blackberry Balance, is now ready for use. According to the firm, the availability of Knox features now depends on mobile operators.
A Samsung spokesperson said, "Galaxy S4 is Knox-ready technically. Commercial availability depends on B2B contracts."
While Samsung has yet to elaborate, this seems to suggest that enabling Knox is now down to the UK operators that are offering the Samsung Galaxy S4 on business contracts, which include O2, EE and Vodafone.
Of course, Three is not offering the Galaxy S4 on B2B contracts due to its focus on the consumer market, and Samsung doesn't seem to be offering it directly, with the device not yet showing on its business website.
However, there is confusion over how to enable Knox on S4 handsets. EE told us that it has nothing to say on the matter just yet, while Vodafone said that the feature will not be ready for customers who buy the phone now. We have yet to hear back from O2, but will update this story when we do.
For those looking to buy a Samsung Galaxy S4 on a B2B contract with either O2, EE or Vodafone, the operators' pricing starts from £22.36 a month, £30 a month with a £149.99 upfront cost, and £30.83 per month, respectively. That said, it looks like you might have to wait a while for Knox. µ
