THE GAP IN USAGE between desktop web browsers Chrome and Firefox is widening as the Google browser's market share slips, allowing Firefox to gain a stronger position as the second most popular web browser.
The most reecent data from statistics web site Netmarketshare shows that this time last year Chrome and Firefox were neck and neck in the race, with Firefox having second place with 19.7 percent market share compared to Chrome's 19.6 percent.
Since then, the situation has taken a turn for the worse for Google, whose Chrome web browser's market share is now 16.3 percent as of April 2013, a decline of 2.5 percent over the year. Firefox, on the other hand, has remained steady, increasing to 20.3 percent market share.
However, neither of these alternative web browsers is the overall most prevalent in the market.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) web browser is still the most widely used, with the latest version, IE10 doubling in market share within the last month.
IE10 had six percent market share in April, up from 2.9 percent the previous month, and the surge is thanks to its release on Windows 7 in February. It is also the default web browser on devices running the Windows RT operating system (OS), such as the Surface RT tablet, where users are unable to install other web browsers.
With 55.8 percent market share, Windows' default IE web browser shows no signs of shifting as most popular, increasing 1.7 percent over the last six months.
However, between March and April overall IE usage dipped by a minor 0.02 percent, while Firefox gained 0.09 percent. Internet Explorer 8 continues to lead among the different versions of IE with 23 percent market share.
Safari remained the fourth most popular web browser, with its desktop only market share, not including iPhone and iPad versions, growing by 0.07 percent to 5.4 percent in April. µ
