SOUTH KOREAN ELECTRONICS FIRM LG has announced that it will launch the world's first curved OLED TV this summer, pipping rival Samsung to the post to take the lead in OLED technology.

The firm announced today that it has begun taking preorders for the 54.6in TV across 1,400 LG retail outlets in South Korea, priced at KRW ₩15 million, or about £8,750, and will start shipping next month.

We contacted LG to ask when the TV is likely to reach the UK, but so far it knows nothing, not even a hint on the price.

Unveiled at CES in January, the EA9800 TV features the industry's first curved screen ergonomic design, providing what LG called an "IMAX-like" viewing experience.

LG seems to think a curved screen offers more immersive viewing by creating the illusion that the display has no edges.

"With more than five years of research behind developing the optimum curvature, the entire screen surface is equidistant from the viewer's eyes, eliminating the problem of screen-edge visual distortion and loss of detail," LG said.

"[It] produces astoundingly vivid and realistic images thanks to its proprietary WRGB technology. The unique Four-Color Pixel system features a white sub-pixel, which works in conjunction with the conventional red, blue, green setup to create the perfect color output."

Picture quality has also been enhanced by "colour refiner" technology, LG said, which delivers images that are "more vibrant and natural than anything seen before".

The curved OLED TV also offers an infinite contrast ratio for optimal contrast levels regardless of ambient brightness or viewing angle.

Measuring a wafer-thin 4.3mm and held in place by a carbon-fibre reinforced frame, the EA9800 weighs just 17kg, meaning you can pick it up and move it around easily if you decide you want to rearrange your room - or if you want to throw it out the window in true rock star style. µ
