CHIP DESIGNER Renesas has announced its 32-bit RX111 microcontroller, claiming it is the first such unit to sport USB connectivity and low power technology.
Renesas' business is heavily weighted towards producing microcontrollers that end up in industrial applications and the automotive industry, however like many semiconductor firms, it is trying to expand into healthcare and "the internet of things". Renesas hopes that its 32-bit RX111 microcontroller will help it crack the market, with the firm touting its USB connectivity and low power consumption.
Renesas not only highlighted the 32-bit addressing of the RX111 but wanted to show off the low power capabilities of the microcontroller, which uses its True Low Power technology. The firm told The INQUIRER that the RX111 uses 100 µA/MHz in run mode, therefore consuming a total of 3.2mA when running at its full clock speed of 32MHz, while sipping just 350nA in software standby mode.
Aside from power consumption figures, Renesas said the USB 2.0 host and zero wait state flash device is particularly well suited to healthcare, building automation, smart meters and sensors. The firm, like many in the industry, is looking to exploit the upcoming boom in sensors that is presented under the marketing banner of "the internet of things".
Renesas' RX111 microcontroller comes in 36 pin and 64 pin options with 16KB or 128KB of embedded flash memory. The firm said that it has a roadmap to larger memory capacities.
Renesas told The INQUIRER that samples of its RX111 microcontroller will be available in July, while mass production is set to start in September. µ
