SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Mozilla has announced that its CEO Gary Kovacs will be stepping down, with former CEO Mitchell Baker expanding her role to include more involvement with day-to-day operations.

In recent years Mozilla has shifted focus from its Firefox desktop web browser and Thunderbird messaging client to mobile versions of its browser and its Firefox OS. Now Kovacs, who was brought in to bring about that change, will be stepping down as part of a wider management shake-up of the organisation.

According to Mozilla, Kovacs' remit was to bring about a shift in focus from the firm's desktop Firefox web browser to mobile, both in terms of the web browser and the firm's Firefox OS. With Mozilla having announced several partners for its Firefox OS at Mobile World Congress, the firm said Kovacs' goal had been met and that he would step down as CEO but remain as a board member.

Kovacs said, "I am very proud of our accomplishments as a team. In our mission to empower the next two billion Web users, we've made great advances in desktop and mobile and in our ability to lead at the pace of the market.

"With this solid foundation and a strong team in place, this is the right time for me to announce the transition plan and a vote of confidence in the abilities of the leadership team."

Baker, who was Mozilla's first CEO, will take a greater role in the day-to-day operations at Mozilla, although she won't be retaking the CEO role. She wrote on her blog, "I'll be more deeply involvement in Mozilla's daily activities during the transition period and in the CEO search.

"I'll also be working to ensure that our partners and individual contributors have the tools they need to make meaningful contributions to Mozilla, and through us to the potential of the web."

Mozilla said that it has started to look for Kovacs' replacement. µ
