HACKTIVIST GROUP Anonymous reached out and touched Israel this weekend, but its target said that little damage was done.
The group announced its operation against Israel at the tail end of last week. In a release to Anonpaste it said that OpIsrael was retaliation for human rights violations by Israel and that its mission was to erase it from the internet.
"To the government of Israel: You have NOT stopped your endless human right violations. You have NOT stopped illegal settlements. You have NOT respected the ceasefire. You have shown that you do NOT respect international law," Anonymous said.
"This is why that on April 7, elite cyber-squadrons from around the world have decided to unite in solidarity with the Palestinian people against Israel as one entity to disrupt and erase Israel from cyberspace."
According to Israeli reports there was little damage done. A report at the Jerusalem Post said that the attacks were monitored closely by local security company Avnet.
Avnet expressed a virtual yawn, saying that while denial of service attacks had been directed against a number of website servers, they had been easily thwarted.
Ronni Becher, head of the cyber attack section at Avnet, told the Jerusalem Post that the attack was massive, but added, "It seems that these are simply quite basic attacks, that are not unusual in their complexity... and which suit amateur children."
The Jerusalem Post was also subjected to a denial of service attack, but it did not choose to go into too much detail about this.
"I don't want to go into the specifics of how we combated this attack, but suffice it to say, we were successful in neutralizing the threat. We have been taking all measures to protect the site since last week, in advance of the anticipated attacks by Anonymous," said Jerusalem Post CTO Yossi Aviv.
"The Jerusalem Post places great importance on the smooth running of the website, with its hundreds of thousands of visitors every day from every corner of the world." µ
