Blames human error

Sony's Xperia Tablet Z comes with Android 4.1

JAPANESE HARDWARE MAKER Sony has delayed its launch of the Xperia Tablet Z until late May, despite the firm's earlier promise of an April release.

Sony started taking preorders for the Xperia Tablet Z two weeks ago, promising shipping dates between 12-15 April. However, a quick trip over to Sony's website shows that the firm now won't release the tablet until the end of May - bad news for those who have already handed over their cash.

Sony blames the delay on human error. In fact, it says there wasn't a delay - it was never supposed to say April in the first place.

A Sony spokesperson told The INQUIRER, "Xperia Tablet Z became available for pre-order last week and we're delighted by the incredible response. During this process however, some Sony customers were misinformed of the expected delivery date to be 12th - 15th April.

"This was in error and has never been the case; the units will be delivered as scheduled at the end of May. We apologise for any confusion caused - customers are being contacted individually by phone (or email if unavailable) to ensure the correct information reaches them."

If this hasn't put you off, the tablet can still be preordered from Sony, just don't expect to get it anytime soon. The firm is offering 16GB and 32GB WiFi models that are priced at £399 and £449, respectively, while the 16GB LTE model is priced at £499. If you don't fancy paying a lump sum, O2 will also be offering the tablet on contract.

We got our mitts on the Sony Xperia Tablet Z at this year's MWC in Barcelona, and it managed to impress us with its 6.9mm thin frame and its resistance against dust, water and scratches.

The tablet has a 10.1in WUXGA display with Sony's Bravia technology, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core 1.5GHz processor, Google's Android 4.1 Jelly Bean mobile operating system, an 8.1MP rear-facing camera with CMOS sensor, a 2MP front-facing camera, NFC support and a 6,000mAh battery.
