THREE SCUBA DIVERS have been caught cutting a high speed internet cable a few hundred yards off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt.
According to reports they were caught in the act by the Egyptian coast guard, which came across a fishing boat and smelled something fishy, and we don't mean the boat.
Details are light. The world plus dog has a comment from an Egyptian army spokesman on his Facebook page, but it doesn't shed much light on anything. "The armed forces foiled an attempt and arrested three divers while they were cutting a submarine cable," he reported.
We've found what we assume is the Facebook page in question, and we're so pleased that we are bucking a trend and linking to it.
The Egyptian Armed Forces Facebook page includes a hatchet job translated statement that explains that the three divers were caught in the act during the morning.
The translation is so bad that it is hard to make out what happened. Apparently the coast guard came across a fishing boat that was in disarray and hauled up the three drivers that were attached to it.
"[A] crew floating component of [three] were withdrawn individual floating by the Border Guard forces to the border guards point the eastern port berth where he found the number [three] diving cylinder along with a large amount of leakage water as a result of a collision floating rocks[.] During the escape ... Note that he has been throwing the defendants to some belongings sea during chase including diving allowance," it reads.
"The time 1310 - mooring boats ... And edit report the incident to hand him over to the Frontier Corps, which was introduced by the turn to the Attorney General to take the necessary legal action over the incident."
It is not known who translated the above, who the men are, or why they were trying to cut the cable. It is possible that they are Luddites, or possibly not Egyptian citizens. µ
