UK MOBILE OPERATOR Three has revealed that its customer base grew by 900,000 in 2012, as its revenues soared to £1.9bn.
Speaking on Tuesday, the operator revealed that it saw an 11 percent rise in its customer base in 2012, taking its total number of customers to 9.05 million by the end of the year. While it's still lagging behind EE, the UK's largest operator with 28 million subscribers, Three is clearly winning over customers with its unlimited data price plans and its promise of 4G at no extra cost.
Three said that it has seen its biggest customer increase in those signing up to pay monthly contracts, with the segment growing 19 percent to 5.26 million over the 12 month period. It saw a smaller increase in pay as you go customers, which increased two percent to 3.79 million.
Three CEO Dave Dyson said, "Our consistent and strong growth reflects our passion for and focus on providing a great smartphone experience. In the past few months we have more than doubled our spectrum holdings and invested in upgrading our network with Ultrafast technology.
"This investment in network capability and quality further strengthens our customer experience and our opportunity for continued growth."
Dyson also spoke about the company's 4G plans, saying Three is in no rush to roll out LTE connectivity. He said that the firm plans to roll out its 4G services in the fourth quarter of this year, which given that it will be unable to go live until 1 October doesn't come as much of a surprise.
Three's stance not to rush with 4G doesn't come as a surprise, either. The network presently offers a range of smartphones on its DC-HSDPA network, which can offer speeds close to those of 4G at a fraction of the price. What's more, given its 'Three' brand, we're sure it's still keen to market itself as the best 3G network in the UK. µ
