FIRST PERSON SHOOTER GAME Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was the UK's best selling entertainment product of 2012, the entertainment retailers association (ERA) has announced, with sales of 2.7 million copies.
The association's figures stretch across not only the video game industry but music and film too, meaning that the first person shooter outsold all titles in every type of media on sale last year. For a likely comparison, ERA said 2011's biggest selling entertainment title was Adele's second album, 21, which sold 3.9 million units.
The ERA 2012 entertainment chart shows that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 managed to shift 2,672,364 copies, while soccer game Fifa 2013 wasn't far behind with 2,601,877 unit sales, followed by Hollywood blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises, which sold 1,694,434 units.
ERA director general Kim Bayley said 2012 was a "tough year" for entertainment due to a "number of factors".
"This sharp 25 percent shrinkage in sales of the biggest titles suggests that the quality of releases was at least partly to blame," she said.
In 2011 some 19 titles sold over one million units. In 2012 there were just eight products in the million plus seller category.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 grossed $1bn worldwide in just 15 days after release last November. The game's predecessor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 took 24 hours longer to pull in the same amount, while Ferngully revisited movie Avatar took 24 more hours than that.
In total, the Call of Duty video games canon has made more money than the space opera Star Wars series and all the scared boy goes to weird private school Harry Potter films put together. µ
