THE COMPANY behind the Ouya gaming console is looking to land big names for the device in the coming months.
Speaking at the South By Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, Texas, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said that the company hopes to add support for Netflix, Hulu and Amazon streaming video services.
"Ouya is built on Android, which means in addition to games we are going to have content," Uhrman said. "We will have streaming video content."
Additionally, Uhrman said that the company will partner with major game studios to help bring high-profile titles to the console.
The company has already secured a deal to bring Final Fantasy III to the console and Uhrman believes that the attractive pricing structure of the Ouya marketplace will convince other "AAA" game developers to build for the device.
"We are working with all the AAA's and the excitement and interest is a couple things: bringing the games back to TV, which is where they belong, and price point," she explained.
With the Kickstarter funded Ouya console set for general public availability in June - supporters to get their devices in late March - Uhrman said that landing partners for new games and services will be increasingly important.
She noted that even after Ouya arrives on the market the company will be looking to add new features and services, such as online multiplayer gaming, throughout the coming months.
The current lineup for Ouya, however, has been more than enough to build customer expectations. Uhrman said that the company has already received orders for the device from some 110 countries, a welcome rush, but one that has also increased the stress on the company to be able to meet demand.
"The thing that is different about hardware versus software is the more successful you are, the more you need," Uhrman mused. µ
