CHIP DESIGNER ARM has announced that it collaborated with Synopsys to tape out a Mali T658 GPU using a 20nm process node.
ARM has been pushing its Mali GPU designs out to its CPU licensees that do not have the resources to develop their own GPUs, and it competes with British graphics chip design rival Imagination Technologies. The firm announced that its high-end Mali T658 GPU taped out on a 20nm process node using Synopsys' Design Compiler.
ARM said the design supports double-patterning support and that further optimisations will help hone the implementation for specific Mali use cases.
Pete Hutton, GM of ARM's Media Processing Division said, "Mali GPUs are found in most Android tablets and smart digital telvisions currently shipping, and are one of the most popular graphics solutions for smartphones. Users' demand for advanced graphics continues to increase, which means that optimizing GPUs for selected end devices is essential. Building on a long history of successful collaborations with Synopsys, this implementation will enable designers to optimally implement ARM Mali T600 family GPUs using Synopsys tools in sub 20nm leading-edge process technologies."
Chip designers typically work with firms such as Mentor Graphics and Synopsis to make sure their designs are effectively transferred to silicon. Antun Domic, SVP and GM of the Implementation Group at Synopsys said, "Through this collaboration with ARM, the Synopsys Galaxy Implementation Platform with In-Design physical verification combines with the ARM Mali IP and Artisan physical IP to provide a proven, DPT-compliant solution that will help accelerate the time to design closure on complex SoCs at 20nm and below."
Despite the tape out, ARM did not say when Mali T658 GPUs fabbed at 20nm will appear in final system on chip (SoC) silicon. µ
